EVENT AND FUNDRAISING FACTS
Avon Products, Inc. is committed to being the company for women. The Avon Breast Cancer Crusade, launched in 1993, has to date raised approximately $165 million in the U.S. for access to care and finding a cure for breast cancer. In the U.S. these funds are raised through sale of special “pink ribbon” fundraising products by Avon Sales Representatives – 550,000 across the country – and through the series of Avon Breast Cancer 3-Day walks and other special events. The Avon Breast Cancer Crusade is part of the Avon Worldwide Fund for Women’s Health, which supports programs in 35 countries for breast cancer and other women’s health issues.
What is the 3-Day?
The Avon Breast Cancer 3-Day is a series of three-day, 60-mile fundraising walks, each with some 3,000 dedicated walkers and 500 volunteer crew, inaugurated in October 1998.
The Avon 3-Day is the largest event of its kind ever undertaken in the fight against breast cancer. Since its inception in 1998, the series has generated approximately $115 million in net proceeds.
In 2002 there will be 13 Avon Breast Cancer 3-Days from April to October, and nearly 40,000 walkers are expected to participate in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Colorado, Dallas, Florida, Los Angeles, Michigan, New York, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington, DC.
The Avon Breast Cancer 3-Day is part of the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade. Founded in the U.S. in 1993, the Avon Crusade focuses on medically underserved women and raises funds for access to care and finding a cure for breast cancer.
Who participates in the 3-Day?
The Avon Breast Cancer 3-Days attract people of diverse background who are willing and able to demonstrate their commitment with the registration fee of $75, the fundraising requirement of $1,900 and physical challenge of walking 60 miles over three days. The ages range from 17 to 70+. Many are breast cancer survivors, or loved ones of women suffering from, or lost to, the disease. For these, the Avon 3-Day is part of the healing process. Other participants have no personal connection to breast cancer, but are committed to making a difference. For all, the Avon 3-Day is a life changing experience that allows them to set new goals and achieve new heights. Walkers receive year-round coaching from Avon 3-Day staff members in both training and fundraising. If a registered walker does not feel able to reach the fundraising goal, or if someone wishes to support the event in a different manner, she or he can participate as a member of the crew or as a volunteer. There is a role for everyone.
Where does the money go?
Funds raised by the Avon Breast Cancer 3-Days support five key areas of the breast cancer cause: medical research into possible causes, prevention, treatment and cure of breast cancer; clinical care for breast cancer patients; financial assistance and support services for survivors, patients and their families; educational seminars; and community-based early detection programs across the country. There is a particular focus on reaching medically underserved women. The funds are deposited into a separate bank account established for each Avon 3-Day, and are disbursed as grants through the Avon Foundation to carefully selected breast cancer programs and academic research centers. The Foundation receives no fee for managing and disbursing the funds. Avon is committed to distributing the funds in a timely manner, and the tens of millions raised by each Avon 3-Day series are dispersed by the following year.
The Avon Breast Cancer Crusade is committed to ensuring that much of the funds raised are returned to the regions in which the Avon 3-Days take place. There are funded non-profit, community programs in every Avon 3-Day region. Additionally, the ten funded research centers are located in the areas of Avon 3-Day events. However, Avon is committed to ensuring that women are not excluded from breast health programs simply because they do not live near an Avon 3-Day event, and programs are supported nationwide.
There are currently 200 breast cancer researchers at 10 institutions supported by Avon funds, with more research awards slated for 2002.
Since 1993, Avon has funded more than 600 non-profit, community-based breast health programs across the U.S. to reach women, especially medically underserved women, with information about the importance of detecting breast cancer early and to refer them to low-cost or free mammograms and clinical breast exams in their own communities. Every Avon-funded breast health program must guarantee diagnostic follow up and treatment for any woman with a suspicious mammogram or screening.
How much money will be raised?
From 1998 through 2001, the Avon Breast Cancer 3-Days have delivered approximately $115 million net. The amount raised in each event depends upon how many walkers participate and how much they each raise. The estimated net proceeds are announced at each opening ceremony, and financial information on the Avon 3-Days is available 90 days after the close of each event.
The average percentage returned by the Avon 3-Days is 60%. This exceeds the 50% standard set forth by the Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance (www.give.org). Of the expenses, less than 5% is for advertising and marketing to recruit thousands of walkers, crew and volunteers and to increase breast cancer awareness. The remainder is divided between administrative expenses (including year-long recruiting, registering, training and coaching thousands of walkers, crew members and volunteers) and event logistics (meals, tents, showers, gear transport, permits, signage, safety training, medical services, security, etc. to move a mobile city of more than 3,000 people for three days).
Avon is the sole sponsor of the 3-Day events and does not solicit support from other companies. To help offset expenses, in-kind contributions are secured by Pallotta TeamWorks, including water, sports drinks, health snacks, medical services and supplies, and other needed materials.
